Material You

2020-2022
UX Design Manager and Lead for Pixel Apps

Material You, Android 12, and Pixel 6 is a cohesive software and hardware experience that challenges the persistent one-size-fits-all approach to OS design. Material You is Google’s latest design language, which brings a more personal, accessible, and adaptive experience to both Google and the open-source community. Hardware and software were co-developed as a holistic design experience that puts the user at its center.

My role

I led a team of 3 interaction designers, 2 visual designers, 2 motion designers, and research team to bring the best of Material You into the everyday apps of Clock, Calculator, and Recorder. We worked closely with the Android and Material teams to ensure that the apps were fully integrated with the new design language, and we also conducted extensive user testing to ensure that the changes were intuitive and easy to use.

Results

The Pixel apps were met with positive feedback from users and critics alike. The new Material You design was praised for its beauty, simplicity, and flexibility. The apps were also praised for their ease of use and their ability to help users get things done quickly and easily.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the new design was consistent across all three apps, as well as across the entire Pixel software system. We also had to make sure that the changes were not disruptive to users who were already familiar with the apps.

Accomplishments

I am proud of the work that we did on the Pixel apps Material You launch. We were able to create beautiful, simple, and easy-to-use apps that are fully integrated with the new design language.
